Market and Social Research Apprenticeship Scheme
Overview
The Market Research apprenticeship scheme provides the opportunity for Isle of Man residents and workers to gain ‘on the job’ training and a FULL professional qualification to improve future career prospects in market or social research. It gives employers on the island, the opportunity to develop market research and training roles within their organisations to give better insights into decision making. Employers will receive funding from the DESC to help with training costs.
What do market and social researchers do?
As a market researcher, you would collect and analyse data and information for your organisation or agency to help inform marketing decisions to attract new customers, keep existing ones or build the reputation of the organisation.
As a social researcher, you might plan, design, conduct, manage and report on social research projects to shape policy or to examine the effectiveness of existing policy, perhaps for a government organisation.
You might end up working in a variety of job roles and industries including marketing, social research, marketing research, Government policy, buyers, suppliers, operations and many more!
What are the benefits of becoming an apprentice?
The benefits of becoming an apprentices include:
- Earn while you learn
- Gain a professional qualification to make your CV more impressive
- Develop ‘sought after’ skills and expertise
How does the scheme work for the apprentice?
The apprenticeship scheme is a one year programme, commencing September 2021. We have 12 places available.
You will apply to an employer in the usual way – look out for local vacancies! Also, get in touch with us at LMS to let us know you are seeking a role – we might be able to help in your search.
Once you secure a position, you will work for an employer gaining ‘on the job’ training in market/social research techniques, 4 days per week. At the same time you will be given one day study leave per week to gain your professional qualification, the Market Research Society (MRS) Advanced Certificate. To achieve the qualification you need to complete an assignment and take an online examination. Some of your classes will be in the evenings, but you will need to develop your assignment and revise for the exams in the daytime.
At London Marketing Set, we will ‘look after’ you at every step of the way throughout your apprenticeship. You will be invited to join an induction evening with other apprentices on the Island, participate in fun interactive webinars (learning the theory or market/social research), attend face to face sessions on revision and exam techniques on the Island, join your tutor and employer for regular progress updates and finally attend a celebration event when you have successfully completed your apprenticeship!

What are the benefits of recruiting an apprentice?
For an employer, benefits include:
- Upskilling your workforce
- Increasing research capabilities and capacity within the organisation
- Utilising Government funding to subsidise cost
- Improving productivity through higher staff morale
How does the scheme work for employers?
The scheme is open to all employers on the Island who would like to recruit to a market research or social research role. There are 12 places available on the scheme, starting in September 2021.
As an employer, you recruit the apprentice for one year through your usual advertising and recruitment channels. You should offer an apprentice wage – the DESC will provide assistance with this (see below).
Once you have recruited your apprentice, you should contact the DESC immediately (training@gov.im or telephone 687088) to complete all the necessary paperwork to secure funding for the qualification and a contribution to your salary costs. You should also advise London Marketing Set that you have recruited, so that we can set the programme in motion and register the apprentice for their professional qualification with the Market Research Society (MRS).
It is important to allow the apprentice one day’s study leave each week to help them to work towards their MRS qualification. Their classes are often held in the evening, but they will need to complete their preparation for the sessions and their assignment to successfully gain the qualification.
The DESC have confirmed that they will reimburse all registration, study, exam and tuition costs for the Apprentice, which will be paid over three instalments throughout the year. No further financial assistance will be given to candidates who fail their assignment or exam and have to re-sit. There is no obligation on your part to keep the apprentice once the year programme is complete.
London Marketing Set will send employers regular reports on their academic progress.
